Sergio Mattarella emphasizes the societal impact of femicide and the necessity for gender equality in remarks made during his visit to Japan.
On March 8, 2025, Italian President Sergio Mattarella delivered remarks addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women while on an official visit to Japan.
He stated that every act of femicide represents an attack on society as a whole.
'We must focus on combating this shameful and unacceptable plague of violence against women,' Mattarella declared.
He highlighted the importance of both preventative measures and educational initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of genuine equality, emphasizing the need to eradicate stereotypes, prejudices, and entrenched habits.
In conjunction with this, Mattarella stressed that policies for family inclusivity should ensure that women should never have to choose between family and career.
This sentiment was echoed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who noted that while female employment figures have reached a record high—exceeding ten million working women—significant work remains to achieve full gender parity in all sectors.
Meloni reiterated the importance of allowing women to pursue their professional aspirations without sacrificing their family lives.
During his visit, Mattarella also met with survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, discussing the ongoing global threat of nuclear conflict.
He warned that strategic dialogue has so far prevented a new nuclear catastrophe, but that the proliferation of nuclear arsenals continues to pose a grave threat, with motivations often rooted in aggression rather than defense.
Separately,
Pope Francis addressed the need for social support of motherhood and the dignity of all lives, especially the most vulnerable.
In a message delivered to participants of the Movement for Life pilgrimage, he condemned the so-called 'culture of waste,' advocating for a commitment to serve humanity at every stage of life, rather than condoning the elimination of the most vulnerable members of society.
As International Women's Day continues to highlight the struggle for gender equality and women's rights, leaders in Italy reaffirm their commitment to promote inclusive policies that benefit all members of society.
