New Developments in Chiara Poggi Murder Case: Andrea Sempio Investigated for Homicide

New Developments in Chiara Poggi Murder Case: Andrea Sempio Investigated for Homicide

Eighteen years after the tragic death of Chiara Poggi, a new suspect emerges in the ongoing investigation.
The investigation into the murder of Chiara Poggi, a 26-year-old woman found dead on August 13, 2007, at her family's home in Garlasco, Pavia, has taken a dramatic turn with the identification of a new suspect, Andrea Sempio, 37, a friend of Chiara's brother, Marco Poggi.

Sempio was reportedly 19 years old at the time of the incident and has previously been linked to the case, having been the focus of separate inquiries concerning DNA found under Chiara Poggi’s fingernails between 2016 and 2017. Those allegations had ultimately been dismissed by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office, which characterized them as an unsuccessful attempt to find an alternative suspect to Alberto Stasi, who was convicted of the crime.

Recent advancements in DNA analysis, utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, have prompted a re-examination of the case.

Consequently, Sempio has been served a notice of guarantee by carabinieri, indicating that he is now under investigation for homicide in conspiracy with unknown individuals or potentially with Stasi himself.

He is scheduled to appear before the carabinieri in Milan to undergo a salivary examination and swab testing, procedures required by the investigating judge in Pavia.

These test results will be compared against DNA samples retrieved from the crime scene.

In February, the European Court of Human Rights rejected an application from Stasi, deeming it 'manifestly unfounded,' aimed at overturning his definitive sentence of 16 years in prison for the murder of Chiara Poggi.

The case has remained a focal point of public interest and legal scrutiny since its inception due to its complex nature and the length of time that has elapsed since the initial investigation.

Following the announcement of the new investigation into Sempio, Rita Poggi, the mother of Chiara, expressed her feelings succinctly, stating, 'We have nothing to say.

We learned about it from the news...

and we have nothing to say.' When asked if the renewed investigation could lead to further distress for the family, she responded, 'Just imagine...'.

This reaction underscores the emotional toll that the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the case continues to exert on the victim's family.
