Violence Against Young Women in Milan Marks International Women's Day

Violence Against Young Women in Milan Marks International Women's Day

Incidents of aggression involving minors raise concerns over safety in public transport.
On March 8, International Women's Day, Milan witnessed a series of violent incidents involving young female victims, sparking a renewed discussion regarding safety in public spaces.

The first incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when a 16-year-old girl was assaulted while traveling on the metro between the Cadorna and Rho Fiera stops.

The victim and her friend were approached by three young men of North African descent who began to verbally insult them.

In response to the harassment, the girl slapped one of the assailants, leading him to retaliate with a sharp object, inflicting a cut to her left eyebrow.

Bystanders alerted emergency services, and paramedics transported her to Fatebenefratelli Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Local political figures have reacted strongly to the incident.

Riccardo De Corato, a member of the Fratelli d’Italia party and former Deputy Mayor of Milan, commented on the incident, emphasizing that foreign nationals have been involved in numerous assaults that resort to the use of knives.

He highlighted a decline in crime rates during a period when a police presence was regularly maintained on public transport under right-leaning administrations, suggesting a correlation between police presence and public safety.

This incident was closely followed by another aggressive act on Sunday, involving a 17-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted in a separate metro incident.

The suspect, a 42-year-old Egyptian man with a valid residence permit, was apprehended by local police shortly after the girl reported the harassment to officers in Piazza Duomo.

According to police reports, the accused had followed the victim from the train platform until exiting through the turnstiles.

Surveillance footage corroborated her account, leading to his arrest and subsequent detention in San Vittore prison pending a preliminary hearing.

These recent events form part of a troubling pattern of violence against young women in the Milan area.

In December, another incident involved a 33-year-old Egyptian man who allegedly attempted to assault a young woman exiting the metro in Cologno.

He was reported to have approached her from behind and was later arrested by police in response to the victim's distress calls.

The involvement of foreign nationals in these violent incidents has prompted discussions on immigration and public safety policies in the region, underscoring systemic concerns about the balance between maintaining public order and addressing social issues related to demographic diversity.

Police investigations into the recent attacks are ongoing, as officials assess measures to enhance security within the Milan public transport system.
