The Italian government is preparing to introduce a legislative measure aimed at providing legal protection to law enforcement officers who face investigations for actions taken while on duty.

This announcement was made by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in an interview, where he outlined the complexities and risks faced by police forces and similar professions.

Piantedosi emphasized that certain categories of workers, including police officers, are often placed in critical and complicated situations due to the nature of their roles.

He asserted that the proposed measure would seek to mitigate the burdens of lengthy legal processes that officers may endure before their innocence is established.

The discussion comes in the wake of the death of Ramy, a young Egyptian man, following a prolonged police chase in Milan, which has raised concerns about the treatment of law enforcement in critical incidents.

Piantedosi clarified that the proposed legislation is not aimed at providing legal immunity or a 'blanket shield' for officers.

He noted that such provisions have been rejected even by police unions, acknowledging fears among critics that such measures may inadvertently justify potential misconduct by officers.

The Interior Minister explained that the objective is focused solely on providing financial support for legal defenses, as many officers face significant economic and professional challenges while awaiting investigations' outcomes.

He stated that the government plans to propose advancements in a security law allowing for the state to cover legal fees for officers engaged in challenging and hazardous work, maintaining that such support would not influence judicial processes.

Additionally, the Chief of Staff of the Defense, General Portolano, has indicated the need for a review of the objectives and staffing within the 'Strade Sicure' operation, where military personnel contribute to national security alongside police forces.

Portolano highlighted the valuable role that military personnel play in maintaining public safety, a sentiment echoed by Piantedosi, who assured financial backing for the operation throughout the next three years.

In relation to Italian repatriation efforts, the government has announced enhancements to the operational capabilities of repatriation centers in Albania, aligning with broader European objectives to strengthen return systems.

These adjustments are intended to maximize the efficiency of the existing facilities without altering their fundamental functions, which are expected to resume fully in the months ahead.
