Murder of University Student in Messina: Suspect Arrested

Murder of University Student in Messina: Suspect Arrested

Stefano Argentino, a 27-year-old university colleague, apprehended in connection with the fatal stabbing of Sara Campanella, a 22-year-old student.
On April 1, 2025, Sara Campanella, a 22-year-old university student from Misilmeri, was fatally stabbed in Messina, Italy, near the entrance of the G. Celeste stadium.

The incident occurred in broad daylight and in the presence of multiple witnesses, leading to a swift investigation by local law enforcement.

The primary suspect, identified as Stefano Argentino, 27, also a student at the same university, was taken into custody by the Carabinieri after a thorough manhunt.

The arrest was made possible with assistance from the Carabinieri Command of Siracusa, who located him in his hometown of Noto.

A detention decree was issued by the local prosecutor's office.

Initial reports indicate that the attack took place on Viale Gazzi, where Campanella was reportedly followed by Argentino.

Following a confrontation near a gas station, he allegedly stabbed her in the neck before fleeing the scene.

Despite immediate medical assistance, which included transport to the Policlinico hospital, Campanella succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.

Witnesses described her final moments, noting her distress and stating that she called out for help before she was attacked.

Argentino, according to prosecutors, had held an infatuation for Campanella for approximately two years, and his advances were confirmed by peers to be persistent and unwanted.

Investigators are expected to examine electronic devices belonging to both Campanella and Argentino to further clarify the nature of their relationship and any relevant communications leading up to the incident.

In response to her death, protests erupted in Messina, organized by various student groups including NonUnaDiMeno and Udu.

Hundreds gathered in the city's Vittorio Emanuele Gallery to express their outrage and sorrow over the incident.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for April 3, 2025, organized by the University of Messina, in remembrance of Campanella.

Separately, a similar incident was reported involving Ilaria Sula, another university student in Rome, who was found deceased in a suitcase.

The ex-boyfriend of Sula has confessed to her murder, complicating ongoing societal discussions regarding violence against women and the emerging patterns surrounding such crimes in Italy.
