Italy Announces Extensive Budget Cuts to Meet EU Fiscal Rules

Italy Announces Extensive Budget Cuts to Meet EU Fiscal Rules

Significant reductions in public spending as Palazzo Chigi targets savings across multiple government areas by 2027.
The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has detailed substantial budget reductions as part of its strategy to align with new European Union fiscal regulations.

According to a recently released budget plan by the Council of Ministers' Presidency, these austerity measures aim to save approximately 1.5 billion euros by the year 2027.

These financial cuts will be applied across various non-core ministries associated with Palazzo Chigi.

Most significantly, the budget allocates a drastic reduction of 94.78% in spending for official cars and national ceremonies in the current year, with funds shrinking from nearly half a million euros to just 29,000 euros.

Furthermore, expenditure on service vehicles, including maintenance and fuel, is set to decrease by 5% annually.

A particularly notable decision relates to the facilities built in Sardinia for the 2009 G8 summit, which were ultimately abandoned as the event was moved to L'Aquila following a devastating earthquake in the region.

These dormant structures have incurred nearly four million euros annually in state expenses.

The government has proposed that future maintenance costs be covered by the Sardinian regional government.

Despite these reductions, some budgetary allocations have seen increases.

Notably, rent costs for government properties have risen, moving from 8.6 million euros in 2024 to an anticipated 12.5 million euros in 2025, amidst broader growth in compulsory operational expenditures by 4.68% over the past year.

Simultaneously, spending on task forces and mission structures, including prominent initiatives such as the "Piano Mattei", "Zes" (Special Economic Zones), and allocation from the "Pnrr" (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), has escalated to more than 27 million euros, marking a significant increase of nearly 14 million euros compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the recently published document indicates a 5% reduction in budget for media support, reducing it by 4.2 million euros, alongside a 6.11% cut in family policy funding, dropping by 9.2 million euros.

Despite these cuts, larger allocations for family-related measures are anticipated from future general financial maneuvers.

These austerity measures reflect the Italian government’s endeavor to comply with EU fiscal oversight, requiring member states to adhere to stricter budgetary discipline.
