Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League party, has publicly signaled his interest in returning to the role of Minister of the Interior, a position he previously held.

During a speech in Florence, Salvini indicated he is "available" for a potential comeback.

His ambition comes following his acquittal in a high-profile trial related to allegations of kidnapping during his time in office, which has removed some of the stigma attached to his leadership.

Currently, the post is held by Matteo Piantedosi, who enjoys the backing of coalition partners, including Brothers of Italy (FdI) and Forza Italia.

This support has led to a reluctance among the current government leadership to initiate a cabinet reshuffle.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has praised Piantedosi’s performance, stating, "I have great respect for Minister Piantedosi; he is doing an excellent job."

Salvini believes that reclaiming the Interior Ministry is crucial for boosting the League's political standing ahead of future elections, particularly with aspirations for his party to become the leading force in the coalition and for him to potentially become Prime Minister.

He has indicated that this might be his last term after suggesting he would step down from the party leadership by the next congress in 2029.

The internal dynamics of the coalition reveal skepticism about demand for a cabinet shake-up, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signaling that she does not favor any changes.

Due to this, members of the League have tempered their rhetoric, explaining that while there is enthusiasm within the party for Salvini’s return, he remains engrossed in his responsibilities as Minister of Infrastructure and aims to work constructively within the coalition.

In a bid to ease tensions, Salvini has reportedly reached out to Piantedosi to express mutual respect and friendship, highlighting their shared professional history when Piantedosi served as his chief of staff during Salvini’s previous tenure.

Piantedosi, focusing on his work, has dismissed rumors about seeking other political roles, stating his aspirations lie strictly within his current position.

He humorously mentioned that outside of his ministerial duties, he aspires only to contribute to his local football team, Avellino Calcio.

As discussions on potential reshuffling continue amidst the coalition's intricate landscape, both Salvini and Piantedosi maintain a professional rapport, underscoring their commitment to collaborative governance.
