Maserati Faces Production Decline Amid Structural Challenges

Production plummets to 1,000 vehicles in three months, raising concerns over the brand's future.
Maserati, the iconic luxury vehicle brand established in 1914 and integrated into the Agnelli family’s automotive empire in 1993, has reported a significant decline in production, producing only 1,000 vehicles over the last three months.

This figure marks a stark decrease compared to the already troubling production numbers from the previous year.

In the first quarter of 2025, the historic Modena plant manufactured 30 MC20 models, while 70 units of the Gran Cabrio and Gran Turismo were produced at the Mirafiori plant, and 930 Grecale units came from the Cassino facility.

In contrast, the same period last year saw a total of 1,320 vehicles produced at the Turin plant, 105 in Emilia, and 2,391 in the Lazio plant.

Additionally, production figures from the first quarter of 2017 highlight the extent of the decline, where over 15,000 vehicles were produced at Mirafiori alone.

The UILM union has voiced strong criticism of Stellantis, the parent company of Maserati, claiming that the current management has effectively "decided the death" of the brand.

UILM General Secretary Rocco Palombella urged company chairman John Elkann to take immediate action, advocating for substantial investments and the introduction of new models, or alternatively, the creation of a luxury automotive division alongside Ferrari, which the union believes is a viable path forward.

In a letter addressed to Elkann, Palombella characterized the current situation as critical, emphasizing the need for intervention to protect what he called a "strategic sector for our country" and to safeguard thousands of jobs.

Palombella has stressed that the current challenges are not primarily due to tariffs or the transition to electric vehicles; instead, they are consequences of long-term strategic decisions that have led to Maserati’s industrial decline.

He referenced a prior correspondence from July 30, in which he formally indicated the issues facing the brand.

Carlos Tavares, the then-CEO of Stellantis, had previously responded that Maserati would remain the sole brand of vehicles fully designed, developed, and produced in Italy, asserting that the group was making significant headway in expanding the brand internationally.

Looking ahead to 2025, predictions indicate that Maserati's production may not exceed 4,000 units.

This contrasts sharply with figures from two years ago, where total production reached 27,166 units, with Cassino producing 17,242, Mirafiori contributing 8,680, and Modena yielding 1,244 vehicles.

Notably, last year's production already fell by 64%, with the number of models decreased from seven to four, resulting in a total of just 9,760 vehicles.

The recent trends suggest that this decline could potentially worsen, as outlined by the FIM-CISL union.

In the latter part of the previous year, Stellantis announced the "High-End Project," incorporating the Motor Valley, although details remain unclear.

The union has stressed the importance of ensuring that this initiative positively impacts future Maserati production across all facilities where the brand operates, including the historic plant in Modena.
