Salvini Reiterates Opposition to MES and Comments on Veneto Elections

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini advocates for Italy to withdraw from the MES while discussing upcoming regional elections.
Matteo Salvini, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the League party, has reaffirmed his firm stance against the European Stability Mechanism (MES).

He stated, "The League will never ratify the MES," emphasizing the party's long-standing opposition to the mechanism since the tenure of former Prime Minister Mario Monti.

Salvini highlighted that the Italian Parliament has already thwarted the European Union's attempts to impose the MES on Italy, asserting that the proposed transformation of the MES into a 'bank bailout' model would provide no benefits to Italian banks, which he claims are financially stable.

In a bold statement regarding Italy's financial contributions, Salvini proposed that Italy should liquidate its share in the MES and reclaim the €15 billion, suggesting that these funds could be redirected towards tax cuts, investments, and pension increases.

He suggested that this would allow Italy the freedom to manage its financial resources independently.

Benedetto Della Vedova, a member of the +Europa party, criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's reluctance to engage with European strategies, claiming that should Meloni meet with German Chancellor Merz, she could announce an immediate push for Parliament to ratify the MES reform.

Della Vedova accused Meloni of being unable to choose between propaganda and reality, noting that such a move would signify a commitment to both Italian and European interests.

Daniela Ruffino, a deputy from the Azione party, asserted that the Meloni government represents a majority against the ratification of the MES, akin to the stance taken by Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Ruffino questioned Italy's position within the European Union, following Meloni’s alleged absence from key discussions among European leaders in Kyiv regarding a proposed ceasefire.

Further addressing the regional political landscape, Salvini commented on the upcoming elections in Veneto, affirming that "a winning team should not be changed." He underscored the importance of autonomy in the region and pride in the achievements of the League and its coalition partners in supporting local governance.

Salvini noted the growth of the party and the involvement of several mayors and local administrators in advancing the party's agenda in Veneto.
