Arctic Winds Bring Winter Weather to Southern Italy: A Meteorological Overview

Arctic Winds Bring Winter Weather to Southern Italy: A Meteorological Overview

Cold air from the Arctic creates cyclonic conditions, leading to adverse weather and snowfall at low altitudes in southern regions.
Over the past few days, Italy has been experiencing a notable shift in its weather patterns due to the icy winds blowing in from the Arctic.

As these frigid air masses collide with the warmer waters of the Mediterranean Sea, a cyclone has formed, ushering in distinctly winter-like weather conditions, particularly affecting the southern parts of the country.

Antonio Sanò, the founder of the meteorological website ilmeteo.it, has warned that this phase of winter weather is expected to persist for several more days before undergoing further changes, unfortunately not for the better.

Currently, this active cyclone over the south is causing periods of heavy rain and, notably, snowfall at low altitudes.

The central Adriatic regions are also experiencing the effects of this atmospheric depression, where snow could potentially reach the beaches of Abruzzo, possibly mixed with rain in the coming hours.

Meanwhile, the rest of Italy remains under the influence of the Azores anticyclone, characterized by predominantly clear weather.

This anticyclone's positioning, which now covers central, western, and northern Europe, continues to permit the influx of cold air across Italy, maintaining unstable weather conditions in these affected regions.

In the coming days, some relief from the inclement weather will be seen, as the cyclone in the south is anticipated to weaken by Wednesday, resuming Friday and the days following as continuous cold air fuels another cyclone forming in Algeria.

This situation is poised to bring further weather disruptions as oceanic flow drives the cyclone towards Italy, impacting Sardinia, Sicily, and other southern regions.

To summarize, until Tuesday, the cold weather phase will continue to affect the south and central Adriatic side of Italy with widespread rainfall and snowfall at low elevations, with a particular need for vigilance in the Ionian zones of Calabria and Sicily on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to deteriorate again starting Friday, potentially affecting the weekend.

Temperatures will remain cold both during the day and night, especially in the north, where thermometers may plunge several degrees below zero even in the plains.
