Italian Constitutional Court Appointments Delayed Amidst Political Stalemate

The Selection of Judges for Italy's Constitutional Court Faces Continued Delays Due to Political Impasse
The process to appoint new judges to Italy's Constitutional Court has faced another delay due to an ongoing stalemate between the ruling coalition and opposition parties.

A meeting scheduled for today was postponed as leaders failed to reach consensus on the nominees.

On the agenda was naming the 'technical' fourth judge, requiring agreement between both sides.

Earlier attempts to appoint State Attorney Gabriella Palmieri Sandulli failed due to her perceived closeness to Forza Italia.

Discussions continue, following a call involving Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein, who was urged to propose new candidates.

Following the meeting, both parties exchanged accusations.

The ruling coalition claimed an agreement has been reached, although details about the second judge, expected to be a Forza Italia nominee, remain undecided.

Conversely, the opposition blames the coalition for delays, citing indecision within Forza Italia regarding their candidate.

This deadlock has resulted in the fifteenth unsuccessful attempt to elect a replacement for Silvana Sciarra, a seat vacant for over a year, and the sixth attempt to appoint successors to former judges Augusto Barbera, Franco Modugno, and Giulio Prosperetti, whose terms ended last December.

Amidst rumors, candidates such as Francesco Saverio Marini and Massimo Luciani have remained strong in consideration.

However, the center-right alliance, specifically Forza Italia, has yet to disclose its preferred choice, with potential contenders including lawyer Andrea Di Porto and former parliamentarian Roberto Cassinelli.

The primary concern remains the necessity to agree upon a neutral candidate.

Failure to appoint could lead to operational difficulties within the court, potentially impeding judicial proceedings.

Some experts suggest a list of candidates who are not distinctly affiliated with any single political bloc, like Roberto Garofoli, Alfonso Celotto, and Carlo Deodato, could resolve the impasse.

The political landscape remains tense as both sides prepare for the next scheduled meeting to resolve the appointments, hoping to avoid further institutional gridlock.
