Italian Gas Prices Set to Decline Amid Market Adjustments

Regulatory authority announces a projected 10% reduction in gas tariffs for April 2025 as wholesale prices decrease.
As of April 2, 2025, Italian energy bills are expected to see a decline, albeit remaining higher than levels recorded a year prior.

The regulatory authority ARERA is set to announce gas tariffs for the month of March, reflecting a shift from quarterly to monthly updates for vulnerable consumers still under the protective service.

Calculations suggest an approximate 10% decrease in costs, largely attributed to a significant reduction in wholesale market prices.

In March 2025, the Italian wholesale gas market (PSV) experienced a noted decrease of about 19.4% from February, averaging just under €43 per megawatt hour.

Consequently, the final gas price is projected to be around €1.18 per cubic meter, down from €1.30 in February, during which bills had risen by 3% compared to January.

In the electricity sector, the tariffs for qualified vulnerable consumers are also experiencing a reduction.

For the second quarter, electricity bills are anticipated to decrease by 2.4%, driven mainly by a 2.1% drop in the energy component of the price, now at €0.16 per kilowatt hour.

Nevertheless, these figures reflect higher costs compared to 2024, when the average electricity price was recorded at €108 per megawatt hour, which represented an 18% decrease from the preceding year.

Additionally, a new bonus of €200 is available for individuals with an annual ISEE income under €25,000.

This extraordinary contribution, as stipulated in the recent energy bill under consideration in the Italian Parliament, is set to be disbursed in daily installments of €1.64 until July 31. Eligible recipients of the social bonus will receive this automatically.

Looking ahead, predictions regarding energy prices indicate that based on gas futures on the TTF market in Amsterdam, current pricing levels are expected to hold steady through March of the following year.

A drop below €40 per megawatt hour may not be seen until April 2026. If such forecasts materialize, it is anticipated that electricity prices—predominantly influenced by gas rates—will not experience further reductions.

In parallel, consumer advocacy and utility management associations are advocating for the establishment of a new professional category within Italy, termed 'utility manager.' This role is envisioned to assist consumers in navigating the myriad offers in the competitive market of energy and telecommunications services.

These organizations underscore the necessity for governmental support to safeguard consumers from aggressive telemarketing and unscrupulous operators, which have led to steep increases in household and business energy expenses.
