Newborn Abducted and Recovered in Cosenza: Couple Arrested

A newborn abducted from a clinic in Cosenza was recovered within hours by Italian police. A couple has been arrested following the incident.
In a swift police operation, a newborn baby abducted from the Sacro Cuore Clinic in Cosenza was safely recovered just four hours after the crime.

The infant, only a day old, was found in good condition, and the suspects were detained by law enforcement agencies.

The incident unfolded on the afternoon of January 21, 2025, when a woman impersonating a nurse entered the gynecology department of the clinic.

She approached the grandmother of the newborn, claiming the child needed to be taken to pediatrics for a check-up.

Meanwhile, a man waited in the clinic's lobby with a stroller.

The couple then left the premises with the baby.

Security footage from the clinic proved instrumental in identifying and tracing the suspects.

Law enforcement officials, led by Police Commissioner Giuseppe Cannizzaro, observed the duo fleeing in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, which was later intercepted in the Rocchi district of Rende, on the outskirts of Cosenza.

The suspects, identified as Rosa Vespa, aged 51, of Cosenza origin, and Aqua Moses, aged 43, originally from Senegal, were found to have simulated a pregnancy for nine months.

They had informed their acquaintances that they were expecting a boy.

Consequently, after abducting the newborn, they reportedly dressed her in blue to match their narrative.

The police cordoned off exits in and around Cosenza and reviewed CCTV footage from nearby locations to track the suspects.

This included footage from a local bar showing the pair prior to the kidnapping.

The baby, named Sofia, is the second child of a young couple from Cosenza: a 26-year-old supermarket employee and his 24-year-old wife, a homemaker.

Upon being alerted of the abduction, a coordinated effort unravelled in the city, culminating in the efficient rescue of the infant and the arrest of the suspects.

Both suspects are now in custody as investigations continue into their motives and any potential previous offenses.
