Italy is preparing for a significant weather disturbance as unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to persist throughout the week.

Following a series of storm systems that began on Thursday, regions in the northwest are particularly vulnerable to severe weather phenomena, characterized by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, sudden gusts of wind, and localized hailstorms.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that Thursday will see the initial effects of a powerful weather system originating from North Africa and Tunisia, anticipated to bring turbulent conditions across the major islands and southern peninsula.

Meteorologists describe this system as a Tropical-Like Cyclone (TLC), which combines the characteristics of Mediterranean storms with tropical features, leading to high levels of precipitation, humidity, and strong winds.

A secondary atmospheric disturbance is projected to develop from the northeastern part of Europe during the evening.

This setup could lead to a collision of warm, humid air from Tunisia with cold air from the Baltics, particularly affecting the northeastern regions of Italy.

The Adriatic coast and southern areas are likely to experience the most extreme weather conditions, with expectations of heavy downpours on both Thursday and Friday.

Starting early on Thursday morning, an overall deterioration of weather conditions is anticipated, with overcast skies and scattered precipitation affecting parts of Northern and Central Italy.

Initially localized, these weather events are expected to intensify throughout the day, culminating in peak instability during the afternoon hours.

Regions in the northwest, including Piemonte, Lombardia, and Emilia-Romagna, along with the entire Alpine and pre-Alpine areas, are expected to encounter particularly intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and localized hail.

Central Italy will mainly see storm activity in the internal Apennine regions, gradually extending to the plains and Adriatic coasts.

Southern Italy is not expected to be spared either, with rainfall and thunderstorms forecasted to move from the Apennines into the surrounding low-lying areas.

The two major islands, Sicily and Sardinia, will experience marked variability in weather conditions but are expected to have a significantly lower risk of precipitation compared to the mainland.

In the evening, a progressive improvement in atmospheric conditions is anticipated across much of the country, offering a respite that is expected to last throughout Wednesday, 14th May, with a notable increase in temperatures.
