Surge in Migrant Arrivals to Lampedusa Amid Humanitarian Crisis

Surge in Migrant Arrivals to Lampedusa Amid Humanitarian Crisis

Over 700 migrants arrive on the Italian island as NGOs conduct rescues in perilous conditions
Lampedusa has witnessed a significant influx of migrants, with more than 700 individuals reported to have arrived in just one day.

Early reports indicate that around 70 migrants, including two women, managed to reach the island by landing on the rocky shores of Cala Galera.

These individuals had departed from Zuwara, Libya, but 15 suffered injuries during their arrival due to rocky terrain, necessitating medical treatment at a local health facility.

Fortunately, none of the injuries are considered severe.

The newly arrived group includes nationals from Morocco, Bangladesh, and Egypt.

Prior to this group, 125 migrants had already reached Lampedusa.

In a night operation, the Guardia di Finanza intercepted a 12-meter boat carrying 60 individuals from countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Morocco.

These migrants reported having paid between $4,000 and $7,000 each for their passage.

The steady stream of arrivals continues, with a total of 310 individuals landing from six different boats since midnight, bringing the cumulative total to 684 migrants from 13 vessels.

The last group was assisted by financial police and Frontex operators using patrol boats.

Upon arrival, the migrants conveyed that they had set sail from various Libyan ports, including Zuara, Zawiya, Khoms, and Tajura.

They have been relocated to the island's hotspot for processing, and by the morning, around 300 migrants were transferred to Porto Empedocle by the ferry service.

The current number of individuals accommodated on the island stands at 728, with ongoing reports of additional vessels in the vicinity of the coastline.

On Saturday, Lampedusa recorded 11 separate landings, culminating in a total of 581 arrivals.

The NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans reported a separate rescue operation involving their civil rescue vessel Safira, which saved 28 people, including 12 minors, who were adrift in the SAR zone near Tunisia after departing from the Libyan coast at Sabratha.

The operation, conducted at 16:00, followed a morning search that began at 9:00, prompted by the sighting of a body in the water and signs of a shipwreck.

The individuals rescued were from various sub-Saharan and Western African nations and had been at sea for approximately 52 hours, appearing exhausted.

The medical team aboard is currently providing care to them.

Laura Marmolare, president of Mediterranea Saving Humans, expressed regret over not being able to recover the previously sighted body, raising concerns about the potential for a shipwreck without survivors based on debris found in the region.
