Italian Banks and Infrastructure Targeted in New Wave of Cyber Attacks

Italian Banks and Infrastructure Targeted in New Wave of Cyber Attacks

Hacker groups Noname057 and Alixsec disrupt services across financial institutions, ports, and corporations, prompting swift national cybersecurity response
In a coordinated cyber offensive on Sunday, January 12, several significant Italian institutions, including major banks Intesa and MPS, the ports of Taranto and Trieste, and companies such as Vulcanair, have faced cyber attacks traced back to the pro-Russian hacker group Noname057.

These attacks follow closely on the heels of a similar cyber onslaught on Saturday that targeted a range of Italian government ministries and public sector entities.

The attacks, characterized by DoS (Denial of Service) techniques, were executed using Botnets — networks of compromised computers programmed to execute unauthorized tasks.

These attacks disrupt service availability, affecting the functionality of the targeted websites and online services.

The disruptions have been primarily linked to Noname057, part of Holy League, an umbrella organization of several pro-Russian hacker groups.

Additionally, in a possibly coordinated move, the pro-Palestinian hacker group Alixsec, reputed to have connections to Russian interests, has also launched successful attacks on Olidata, Skillbill, and Zucchetti Design during the same timeframe.

Italy's National Cybersecurity Agency has been at the forefront, working from the early hours of the attacks to alert and assist affected entities in recovering their online functionality.

The agency has enhanced monitoring to detect attacks as they emerge, allowing for real-time notifications and intervention efforts.

The government, relevant ministries, and other security-focused institutions have been informed to facilitate a coordinated response.

The weekend's events followed an earlier string of assaults on January 11, when similar entities fell under attack.

Targets included the Ministry of Development, Foreign Affairs, Infrastructure, and Transport, as well as the National Commission for Companies and the Stock Exchange (Consob), and various branches of Italy's police and armed forces.

Public transportation companies in prominent cities such as Rome's Atac, Palermo's Amat, and Genoa's Amt also experienced service interruptions.

Although the disturbances were reportedly contained, they underscore mounting challenges in safeguarding national digital infrastructure.

These attacks highlight the persistent threat international hacker groups pose and the need for fortified cyber-defense mechanisms.

As the situation develops, Italy's cybersecurity response strategies remain under scrutiny to ensure resilience against future intrusions.
