Italy Braces for Severe Weather: Orange Alert Issued for Calabria

Italy Braces for Severe Weather: Orange Alert Issued for Calabria

Northern Italy faces frost and sunshine, while southern regions struggle with snow and rain. Orange alert declared in Calabria amidst evolving weather challenges.
Italy finds itself divided by the forces of nature this January 14th, as the nation experiences a stark contrast in weather conditions from north to south.

According to the Meteorological Service of the Italian Air Force, the southern regions, particularly Calabria, are on high alert due to a persistent onslaught of rain and snow.

An orange alert, signifying a significant risk of adverse weather conditions, has been declared for the Ionian coast of Calabria, highlighting concerns over hydraulic, storm, and hydrogeological risks.

Northern Italy: In the north, regions such as Romagna will experience residual cloudiness with the possibility of low-altitude snow early in the day, followed by clearer skies by afternoon.

Across the rest of the northern territories, the forecast predicts predominantly clear skies with temporary, harmless cloud cover.

However, widespread frosts will grip the northern plains, presenting challenges for residents and potentially impacting daily life and commerce.

Central Italy and Sardinia: In the center and parts of Sardinia, consistent cloud cover is expected over regions like Marche, Abruzzo, and the eastern parts of Sardinia, bringing light precipitation—snowfall is forecast for altitudes starting from 200 to 300 meters.

This is expected to clear later in the day, especially around Marche, providing some respite.

Meanwhile, the rest of the central region will enjoy predominant sunshine interspersed with brief morning clouds over Umbria and adjacent areas in Tuscany.

Southern Italy and Sicily: The south, including Sicily, faces more severe conditions with predominantly overcast skies and significant rain.

The situation is particularly dire in Calabria—especially along its Ionian coastline—and Sicily, where more intense and persistent precipitation is expected.

Central and northern Calabria are likely to see abundant snowfall, starting from altitudes of 700 to 800 meters, while milder snowfall is expected in the southern Apennine mountains from about 500 meters upwards.

Even high altitudes on the Sicilian highlands, starting from 1200 to 1300 meters, may see snow.

Temperature and Wind Patterns: Temperatures are set to fluctuate, with marginal decreases across the Piedmont plains, Ligurian coastlines, north Adriatic coasts, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, and Lazio.

In contrast, areas like the Alps, Prealps, portions of Cilento, central and southern Apulia, Basilicata, and the Ionian part of Calabria will experience noticeable increases.

Maximum temperatures will rise across the Alpine regions, Ligurian Levant, Emilia, high Tuscany, southern Marche, central and southern Lazio, Campania, Apulia, and Basilicata, while decreasing around the Piedmont foothills and central-southern Calabria.

Winds are projected from a moderate to strong northeast direction in the Liguria region, northern Adriatic coasts, central and southern peninsular regions, and major islands, expected to ease in Liguria, the central regions, southern Adriatic, Sardinia, and Sicily.

In other northern areas, varying weak winds are anticipated.

Sea Conditions and Civil Protection Alerts: Sea conditions are reported to be very rough to agitated in the Strait of Sicily and the Ionian Sea, with wave activity gradually diminishing in most basins.

The Italian Civil Protection has issued an orange alert for hydraulic, storm, and hydrogeological risks in northern-central Ionian Calabria and a yellow alert for hydro-related risks in several areas of Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily, and parts of Molise.

On this date, the Italian populace must remain vigilant, especially in areas under heightened alert, and heed the warnings and guidance from civil protection services as nature unleashes its formidable power across the region.
