Railway Chaos in Italy: Electrical Faults and Weather Disruptions Cause Major Delays

Transport disruptions hit Italy again as electrical failures at Rome's Termini Station and severe weather in Calabria cause widespread train cancellations and delays.
Italy's railway network experienced severe disruptions on January 14, 2025, as a combination of electrical faults and adverse weather conditions led to significant train delays and cancellations across the country.

A malfunction at an electrical substation near Rome's Termini Station caused train circulations to halt at 18:10, with delays reaching up to 80 minutes.

The Italian state railway operator, Trenitalia, informed travelers of potential cancellations, attributing them to infrastructure verifications.

Technicians were dispatched promptly to address the issue.

The day began with significant disruptions in southern Italy, particularly along the Tyrrhenian line in Calabria, where heavy rainfall and strong winds resulted in service suspensions between Reggio Calabria and Sapri.

Train services resumed on this line with reduced speeds, but malfunctions persisted, causing delays of up to six hours.

Trenitalia reported the suspension of nine high-speed and Intercity trains, while two night trains recorded delays exceeding 350 minutes.

Stefano Donnarumma, CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, sought to deflect severe criticism by highlighting the scale of the railway services and the number of commuters it serves daily.

He claimed that while such disruptions impacted thousands, the network still managed to transport millions daily.

However, the disruptions prompted a political backlash.

Leaders from various political factions criticized the government for failing to address ongoing transportation issues that plagued Italy’s rail network.

Opposition figures, such as Elly Schlein, Secretary of the Democratic Party, and former Premier Giuseppe Conte, demanded accountability from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, questioning their management of the railway system.

This outcry was amplified by the cumulative effect of repeated incidents since the beginning of the year, with Codacons reporting over 100 issues within two weeks.

Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva and Angelo Bonelli, deputy of AVS and co-spokesperson for Europa Verde, suggested that resources were misallocated, blaming the Transport Ministry's focus on the contentious Bridge over the Strait project.

Both have called for a vote of no confidence against Salvini.

Galeazzo Bignami, representing the ruling Fratelli d'Italia, came to Salvini's defense, denouncing the criticism as unfair and highlighting the historical state and maintenance challenges of Italy’s railway infrastructure.

As the government faces mounting pressures, the spiraling railway disruptions serve as a pressing reminder of the extant infrastructure challenges, exacerbated by adverse weather and operational malfunctions.

The demand for an overhaul in Italy’s transportation strategy remains a pivotal issue amid political turmoil over the country's transport policy.
