Italy's Defense Minister Appeals for Continued Support to Ukraine Amid Senate Vote

Italy's Defense Minister Appeals for Continued Support to Ukraine Amid Senate Vote

Guido Crosetto seeks final approval for military aid to Ukraine as Senate passes resolution with majority backing.
In the Italian Senate, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has addressed lawmakers ahead of the vote on the Ukraine decree, marking the third consecutive January such discussions have been held.

This decree reaffirms Italy's decision to send weapons to Ukraine amidst the prolonged conflict that has lasted nearly thirty-six months.

Crosetto emphasized the importance of ensuring the Italian public remains aware of the gravity of the situation, stating, 'We cannot allow our public opinion to become detached from the conflict or lose sight of its severity.'

During his speech at Palazzo Madama, Crosetto expressed hope that this would be the final request for such support, saying, 'Today I am here to ask Parliament, hopefully for the last time, to continue what we have been doing for the past two and a half years: helping a people who, like us, have the right to defend their freedom and their lives.' He reiterated his hope that this would be the last aid package.

Following the minister's remarks, the majority passed a resolution to extend military support with 97 votes in favor, 26 against, and 40 abstentions.

The message about the time limit was directed at both the public and coalition partners, such as the Lega party.

In December, when the Council of Ministers approved the current decree, the Lega discussed including a provision to confirm military support for the last year, but ultimately did not pursue it due to pressure from Fratelli d'Italia.

Crosetto's speech did not downplay the situation in Ukraine, noting a significant increase in Russian attacks targeting both military and civilian sites.

He expressed hope that changes on the global stage, such as a new U.S. presidency, might usher in a different path toward resolving the ongoing conflict.

Italy has consistently maintained its position of supporting Ukraine to create conditions for a ceasefire and initiate necessary diplomatic engagement for achieving lasting peace.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Five Star Movement and the Greens and Left Alliance, have filed motions calling for an end to arms shipments, as they did last year.

Addressing critics who advocate for military disengagement, Crosetto rhetorically questioned the consequences of ceasing support: 'If we all stopped helping Ukraine, what would happen?

Those four thousand artillery shells falling daily would reach their targets.

Perhaps we would achieve peace because there would be no more Ukraine, and no more living people.

We would have reached a peace found in cemeteries.'
