National Strike Announced by Metalworkers' Unions Over Contract Renewal Stalemate

National Strike Announced by Metalworkers' Unions Over Contract Renewal Stalemate

Unions call for an eight-hour national strike in April as negotiations for the metalworkers' contract remain unresolved.
In response to a protracted deadlock in negotiations for the renewal of the national contract for metalworkers, unions have announced a new national strike set to take place in April.

This planned strike, characterized as lasting "at least eight hours," follows a previous strike on March 28. Union leaders from Fiom-Cgil, Fim-Cisl, and Uilm—Michele De Palma, Ferdinando Uliano, and Rocco Palombella—stated that this action aims to revitalize negotiations, which have been stalled primarily over economic increases.

The unions are advocating for a comprehensive and effective strike across all regions, intended to reinforce their opposition to overtime and flexible working arrangements, as well as to certain regulatory aspects that require approval from the Employee Representatives or unions, with the exception of social safety net measures.

During a press conference, the union leaders criticized employer associations Federmeccanica and Assistal for their reluctance to resume substantial dialogue.

They noted that over eight months have passed since the contract's expiration on June 30, 2024. The unions labeled the employers' current approach as "unacceptable," specifically pointing to the introduction of a "counter-platform" that they claim effectively negates their salary and regulatory demands.

The unions emphasize the necessity of continuing negotiations based on their proposed platform, asserting that the current stance of Federmeccanica and Assistal threatens industrial and labor relations, which could lead to direct repercussions at various levels.

Regarding the economic aspects of the contract renewal, the unions have proposed an increase in minimum salaries by 280 euros gross.

In contrast, employers have suggested a plan focused on enhancing welfare benefits rather than direct salary increases.

Employers are currently offering an adjustment to the minimum tabular wages in line with the European harmonized consumer price index (excluding imported energy goods).

Employers have countered with a proposal to gradually increase tax-exempt flexible benefits, currently capped at 200 euros, to 400 euros, with the potential for this amount to double for expenses related to childcare, school books, and public transport.

Significant elements of the employers' proposal also include the establishment of a lifelong insurance coverage plan to provide a 600 euro monthly income in cases of non-self-sufficiency, as well as enhanced supplementary health care benefits for workers earning under 35,000 euros annually, including reduced deductibles for dental expenses for employees and their families.
