Two North African Cyclones Impact Weather Across Italy

Two North African Cyclones Impact Weather Across Italy

Successive weather systems from North Africa bring heavy rainfall and storms to Italy, with effects expected to persist until Tuesday.
Italy is currently experiencing severe weather as two cyclones from North Africa move across the region.

Meteorologist Mattia Gussoni from iLMeteo.it reports that the first cyclone is slowly advancing north, affecting weather nationwide, including northern regions.

Heavy precipitation is forecast across several regions, including Sardinia, northern Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, Campania, Molise, and southern Abruzzo.

Particularly intense conditions are expected in eastern Sardinia, Puglia, and Calabria.

The first cyclone's influence sustains due to two primary factors: a warm, moist atmospheric river originating from Senegal and extending to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and a high-pressure system, referred to as a 'Rex Block', stationed between Poland and Greece, hindering the cyclone's eastward movement.

Consequently, inclement weather will persist over the Central Mediterranean until Tuesday.

The weather conditions feature strong winds and highly agitated seas, with wave heights expected to reach 6-7 meters in areas such as the Ionian Sea, the Strait of Sicily, the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, and around Sardinia.

For Sunday, cloudy skies are anticipated throughout Italy, with rain primarily in Sardinia and later spreading across various northern and western areas, intensifying in the south by afternoon.

By Monday, as the first cyclone remains over Italy, centered between Sardinia and the Ligurian Sea, a new low-pressure system, originating from the North African disturbance, will deepen over the Ionian Sea.

This will result in periods of moderate to heavy rain between Sicily and Calabria due to another approaching vortex from Libya.

Attention remains focused on the initial North African cyclone moving across the peninsula, soon followed by another developing cyclone impacting southern regions early in the week.

The high-pressure barrier between Poland and Greece is expected to weaken from Tuesday, allowing Atlantic weather systems to influence the region later in the week, likely by Thursday.

Forecast specifics indicate changing conditions:
- Saturday: Northern Italy will be mostly sunny initially, turning worse by evening; weather disruptions in Sardinia and scattered rains elsewhere in central regions, with intense weather moving from Calabria to Basilicata and Puglia in the south.

- Sunday: Overcast skies and scattered rains in Liguria, Piemonte, and Triveneto in the north; rains forecasted in Sardinia and along the peninsula's western coastal regions; rain approaching Sicily and ionic sectors in the south.

- Monday: Moderate precipitation anticipated in northern Italy, especially Piemonte; rain expected in Sardinia and the central peninsular west; new adverse weather targeting regions like Sicily and Calabria.

The forecast suggests a gradual improvement in weather from Tuesday afternoon, though an Atlantic disturbance may arrive by Thursday.
