Urban Development Crisis in Milan Impacts Thousands of Families

Urban Development Crisis in Milan Impacts Thousands of Families

Updated estimates reveal nearly 40,000 people affected by stalled construction projects in Lombardy's capital.
Recent estimates indicate that over 39,000 individuals, encompassing nearly 15,000 families, are facing uncertainty due to an ongoing urban development crisis in Milan.

The crisis involves approximately 420 construction sites, including both authorized projects and those awaiting approval.

These figures were compiled by the Committee "Suspended Families, Lives in Limbo," following a meeting with Lombardy's President Attilio Fontana and the Regional Councillor for Territory and Green Systems, Gianluca Comazzi.

The updated estimates signal dire consequences stemming from the urban planning issues impacting Milan.

A collaborative effort with various real estate promotion and development agencies allowed for a clearer understanding of the situation.

Among the projects already authorized, 250 are facing challenges identified by the Public Prosecutor's Office, while an additional 170 projects are pending authorization.

Collectively, these projects involve over 20,000 residential units, many of which have been sold with significant advance payments already made by buyers.

A staggering 93% of the authorized projects have at least one preliminary agreement in place, confirming the payment of related deposits.

The report outlined that approximately 14,500 families are waiting for the completion of these properties, amounting to around 39,000 individuals affected.

Filippo Borsellino, spokesperson for the Committee, remarked on the expected nature of these figures, noting that extensive data collection, including testimonials, contracts, and personal stories, helped illuminate the gravity of the crisis.

Currently, there are officially 1,625 apartments classified as "blocked," affecting the corresponding family units.

However, partnerships with builders and developers suggest that the total number of families impacted may reach up to 4,167.

Expanding the scope to include all properties associated with at least one issue identified by judicial authorities, the estimate of families in a suspended status potentially rises to 14,481.

President Fontana, with Councillor Comazzi at his side, expressed his full support for the affected families, emphasizing the urgent need to develop a legislative, administrative, and technical pathway to address the situation.

They highlighted that this issue not only concerns individual rights but also the public's trust in governmental institutions.
